The Eye-Openers Psychiatry practice, run by Dr. Itaj Zeegers is centrally located in Palmerston North with a view overlooking the Square.
Care Provided
Eye-Openers Psychiatry provides clear insight into the origin of mental health difficulties. Our focus is on both treatment and mental wellbeing of the client and their family/whanau in order to live a fulfilled life.
We provide treatment for a wide range of mental health issues including depression, burn-out, bipolar disorder, dissociation, psychosis, anxiety and trauma / injury related mental health difficulties.
Psychiatry consultations
This includes initial assessments with advice on diagnosis and treatment and further follow up care.
Psychotherapy
Dr. Itaj Zeegers is trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and provides this form of talking therapy in follow up care.
ACC
Eye-Openers Psychiatry is a treatment provider for ACC and can undertake assessments and treatment for trauma and/or injury related mental health difficulties.
Southern Cross
Eye-Openers Psychiatry is an Affiliated health provider with Southern Cross Health Insurance. Members can have a yearly amount covered depending on their policy.
Dr. Itaj Zeegers

Dr. Zeegers has over 10 years’ experience working in the field of Psychiatry. He has had 5 years of specialty training in The Netherlands and worked over 5 years in the public health sector (DHB) in New Zealand. While working in Aoteroa Dr. Zeegers has come to love his profession as a Psychiatrist. His enthusiasm and genuine interest in patients are characteristics that help him enjoy his daily work.
Working with Maori patients and their family/whanau at the Kaupapa Maori Mental Health service within the DHB has been very inspiring. It has allowed him to get accustomed to Maori history, their values, and spiritual beliefs. While working and studying in different countries around the world, Dr. Zeegers has developed a high level of cultural competency.
What is Psychiatry and Psychotherapy?
Psychiatry is a subspecialty of Medicine and treatment is provided by Psychiatrists who completed over 11 years of training (6 years Medical degree and 5 years specialty training). Psychiatrists are trained in the assessment and treatment for a broad variety of mental health difficulties. Treatment includes advice on medication, psycho-social supports as well as the provision of psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a form of talking therapy. There are various forms of therapy (e.g. Acceptance and commitment therapy and Cognitive behaviour therapy) and these can be provided by both psychiatrists and psychologist/counsellors who completed training in these areas.
